Adit

A passage driven into a mine from the side of a hill. Mine adits are generally used when an ore body is located inside of a mountain but beyond reach above the adjacent valley floor. Adits hold much more cost efficiency compared to vertical shaft mines because miners do not need to be lowered down into a mine.

Adits were quite common throughout 19th-century Nevada and many can be still be found throughout the remote reaches of the state.
