Pronounced "BAY-oh-wah." An unincorporated ranching community in the remote panhandle of Eureka County, 25 miles southwest of Carlin.
The name "Beowawe" comes from the Paiute Native American word meaning "gate," likely named for the peculiar shape of the hills close to town. Beowawe also takes the name of one of two geyser fields just north of the town though all geyser activity was destroyed by the creation of a local dual-flash geothermal power plant constructed in 1985. The town is famous for the nearby "Maiden's Grave," a monument overlooking Gravelly Ford on the Humboldt River east of town.
