Alum Canyon was a reliable source of lumber for the mining camp of Aurora in the late 1860s. Today, an unimproved Forest Service Campground and picnic area exists here amidst a very rare pine-studded canyon setting of Jeffrey Pine in the Wassuk Range.

Alum is signed from SR 359, 12 miles southwest of Hawthorne.
